Executive Director
Kimberly Jo Smith
Kimberly Jo Smith brings a lifelong love of storytelling, history, music, and community-centered work. Born in Maryville, Tennessee, in 1962 to Joseph and Sue Smith, her Appalachian roots and family heritage have profoundly influenced her creative voice and the course of her life’s work.
When Kimberly was twelve years old, she learned that she had a 2nd great-grandfather named Joseph Smith Jr., who had built a church. That discovery began a deeply personal journey—one that would uncover a heritage she had never fully known and reveal the story of a family that had been sorely broken. From that experience grew a lasting dedication to family healing, historical understanding, and the redemptive power of reclaiming one’s roots.
Kimberly earned her Bachelor of Science in English, with an emphasis in writing, from Drury University. She has authored a wide range of works, including historical fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and music. Her writing often draws from history and personal ancestry, reflecting a heartfelt commitment to preserving stories, honoring heritage, and fostering understanding across generations.
In addition to her work as an author, Kimberly is a photographer, historical researcher, and speaker. She devotes much of her time to writing and speaking on the importance of healing within the family. She lives in Missouri with her two children, Bryan and Leah, and continues to serve with a strong emphasis on education, outreach, and meaningful community impact.
